Hospital authorities in northern Brazil reported the extraordinary birth of conjoined twin boys, each with one body and two heads. Obstetrician Neila Dahas, from the Santa Casa de Misericodia Hospital in Belem, disclosed that the twins were delivered via caesarean section on Monday. On the hospital’s website, Dr. Dahas explained that while the twins have separate brains and spinal cords, they share all other vital organs, including the heart, lungs, and liver.
The medical team emphasized that it is too early to predict the twins’ developmental trajectory. One of the boys is currently experiencing respiratory issues and requires specialized medical attention. The newborns were given the names Jesus and Emanuel.
Weighing 9.9 pounds, the twins were initially born in a small hospital in Para, a northern state in Brazil. They were promptly transferred by plane to a more equipped medical facility in the state capital, Belem.
Dr. Dahas underscored the complexity of the situation, stating that separating the heads of the twins would be unfeasible due to their shared set of organs. She explained that historically, children who undergo surgical separation and survive tend to have fewer shared organs. Additionally, Dr. Dahas noted the challenge of determining which head to remove since both brains were functioning normally.
